Kyoto was Japan’s imperial capital for over a thousand years, and even today it feels like time never fully left. The city still carries the quiet grace of its history — from the wooden machiya townhouses and stone-paved streets to the sound of temple bells echoing through the evening air. Most of these photos were taken while wandering through the old centre, especially around Gion — once the heart of geisha culture. Though they are now rare, the district still breathes that same elegance: soft lanterns, calm riversides, and noren curtains swaying at the entrances of shops and tea houses. These simple fabric panels mark when a place is open — a subtle invitation to step inside, part of Kyoto’s charm of blending tradition with daily life. It’s a city that feels both distant and familiar, ancient and alive. I can’t wait to return.
